P ROTEGE LOS SALMONES ESPAÑOLES: Mostramos un total desacuerdo con el modelo de pesca del salmón atlántico que el Gobierno Asturiano pretende aprobar para el año próximo. La evidencia científica demuestra que el salmón atlántico cuenta en España con unas poblaciones muy mermadas y en riesgo, siendo la destrucción del hábitat y la sobrepesca algunas de las causas más importantes, razones por las que la especie se le considera como “vulnerable” en diversos instrumentos de gestión de reconocido prestigio, como la Unión Internacional de Conservación de la Naturaleza. Dada la crítica situación de las poblaciones asturianas de salmón atlántico, creemos que es un grave ejercicio de irresponsabilidad el proponer el exagerado aumento de la temporada y cupos de captura, así como la restricción de la modalidad de captura y suelta, máxime cuando la pesca se ejercerá principalmente en los meses del viaje del salmón a sus lugares de freza.

PROTECT THE SPANISH SALMON We would like to manifest our complete disagreement with the model of fishing mismanagement that the Asturian Government wants to approve for the coming year. Scientific evidence shows that the Atlantic salmon populations in Spain are very reduced and in danger, reduction of fish habitat and overfishing are two of the main causes, for this reason the species is considered “vulnerable” by various controlling bodies such as the U.I.C.N (International Union for Nature Conservation) Considering the critical situation of the Asturian populations we believe that it is completely irresponsible the proposals of augmenting the season and numbers that may be killed, at the same time limiting the catch and release, specially considering that the salmon fishing is done during the months when the Atlantic salmon is travelling to its spawning grounds. Thank you.

Como ya sabe, la evidencia científica demuestra que el salmón atlántico cuenta en España con unas poblaciones muy mermadas y en riesgo, siendo la destrucción del hábitat y la sobrepesca algunas de las causas más importantes, razones por las que la especie se le considera como “vulnerable” en diversos instrumentos de gestión de reconocido prestigio, como la Unión Internacional de Conservación de la Naturaleza. Por tanto, le solicito que archive esta propuesta y que, con rigor científico y pensando siempre en el bien de la especie y del desarrollo rural ligado a los ríos salmoneros, adopte las medidas adecuadas para que el rey del río aumente su presencia natural y sostenible en los ríos del Principado. Le saluda atentamente Dear Mr. President, Through this letter I would like to express my complete disagreement with the rules and regulations on Atlantic salmon fishing that your government wishes to approve for this coming year. As you already know, scientific evidence shows that the Atlantic salmon in Spain has its populations reduced considerably and they are considered endangered, with some of the main reasons being the destruction of salmon habitat and overfishing, what has caused the species to be considered “vulnerable” in several well known methods of salmon control like that of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Considering the critical situation of the Asturian populations of Atlantic salmon, we believe that your posture shows absolute irresponsibility when you propose an exaggerated increase in the length of the fishing season and the proposed catch limits and at the same time the reduction of the catch and release fishing, specially when the fishing is done mainly in the months when salmon is heading its spawning grounds. Due to this, I would ask you to withdraw the proposals that you have made and, with scientific rigour and thinking in the welfare of the species and the rural development which is intimately connected to the salmon rivers, adopt adequate measures so that the king of the rivers can increase its natural sustainable presence in the rivers of the Principality of Asturias.
